Nicholas Holdgate M.D.

Dr. Nicholas Holdgate, a native of Nantucket Island, Massachusetts, moved to Charleston, South Carolina in high school. He attended the Porter-Gaud School and continued his education at the College of Charleston, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in physics. His early career included work at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center.

Dr. Holdgate returned to Charleston to pursue his medical degree at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), where he was honored with the President’s Basic Science Award and named a Presidential Scholar, graduating with his M.D. in 2011. He then completed an internship and residency in internal medicine at MUSC before undertaking a fellowship in rheumatology at Duke University Medical Center. He has gained invaluable experience in both research and the clinical management of a broad spectrum of rheumatic diseases. He received additional training at the Duke Eye Center in the care of inflammatory eye diseases (uveitis).

In 2016, Dr. Holdgate joined Low Country Rheumatology. He is an esteemed member of several professional organizations, including the American College of Rheumatology, the South Carolina Rheumatism Society, and the North Carolina Rheumatology Association.

Outside of his professional commitments, Dr. Holdgate cherishes time with his wife, a Charleston native and pastry chef, and their two children. Most of their free time is spent either in, or around, the water, or traveling.
