Dr. Edgerton obtained his Bachelor of Science degree from Georgetown University, followed by graduating cum laude from Georgetown University School of Medicine in 2001. A distinguished member of the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society, he excelled in his internal medicine residency, securing the Robert Skelton Award as the top resident graduate from all U.S. Army training program in 2004. Dr. Edgerton completed his rheumatology fellowship at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in 2006.
From 2006 to 2013, he served as the Rheumatology Service Chief at Eisenhower Army Medical Center, concurrently holding faculty positions at the Medical College of Georgia and the Uniformed Services University. Dr. Edgerton is a trailblazer in musculoskeletal ultrasound, establishing the ultrasound training program at the Medical College of Georgia. He actively contributes to the American College of Rheumatology ultrasound task force, authoring national guidelines for rheumatologists on ultrasound usage. His research, presented nationally and internationally, encompasses diverse areas, including systemic lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis, with published articles and chapters highlighting his expertise.
Board-certified in internal medicine and rheumatology, Dr. Edgerton is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American College of Rheumatology. He is a respected leader in rheumatology, serving on the Board of Directors and as a committee chair for the American College of Rheumatology. He is a voting member of the American Medical Association House of Delegates and Specialty Society governing council. Dr. Edgerton is nationally recognized for his work in value-based medicine to include treatment pathways and alternative payment models having testified to Congress and advised numerous stakeholders on the topic.
Dr. Edgerton joined Low Country Rheumatology in 2013 after a distinguished 12-year career as a U.S. Army physician, where he attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and received military accolades, including a Bronze Star for valor during his 2008 deployment to Iraq.
Beyond his professional obligations, Dr. Edgerton relishes moments with his wife and two daughters. He remains active, finding joy in activities such as choral performances, swimming and sailing.
